Body damage will NOT stop your donation. In Colorado, Ride to Relief can accept your car with dents, rust, cracked or shattered windows, hail or accident damage, even if it isn’t drivable. Cosmetic problems don’t matter — your vehicle still helps support Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) serving people who are blind or visually impaired. From Colorado Springs to Fort Collins, Aurora to Grand Junction, we’ll take your problem vehicle off your hands at no cost.
Here’s how it works: you donate your damaged car as–is. You do not need to fix the body, replace glass, or make it pass emissions first. We arrange free towing anywhere in Colorado — whether your car is in a Denver alley, a Boulder driveway, or on a farm road near Greeley. The vehicle is sold in its current condition. Your deduction is based on the actual sale price after pickup, not how the car looks. If it sells for more than $500, we provide the IRS paperwork for that exact amount; if it sells for less, you’re still guaranteed a $500 tax receipt. It’s simple, honest, and transparent.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged car in Colorado
Start online or by phone and share the basics: year, make, model, and a quick description of the damage — hail dents in Thornton, rust in Pueblo, cracked windshield in Lakewood, or accident damage in Colorado Springs. We confirm that we can accept it as–is for Heritage for the Blind and answer any questions about the title, towing, and tax deduction.
2. Schedule your free Colorado pickup (running or not)
Once you’re ready, we set a pickup time that fits your schedule. Our towing partners serve the Front Range, the Western Slope, and many rural areas. Your car can be parked on the street in Denver, in a condo lot in Aurora, or in a driveway in Longmont. You don’t pay anything for towing, and you don’t need to repair or clean the vehicle first.
3. Hand over the keys and title, as–is
On pickup day, the driver will guide you through signing over the title. If the car doesn’t start, has flat tires, or cracked glass, that’s okay — we still take it. You’ll receive an initial donation receipt showing that Ride to Relief accepted your vehicle for Heritage for the Blind, which you can keep for your records until the final tax paperwork arrives.
4. We sell your car in its current condition
Your vehicle is sold at auction or to a licensed buyer exactly as it sits, with its dents, rust, broken lights, or body damage. The appearance may lower the sale price, but it will not prevent the donation. The net sale proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired, turning your problem car into meaningful help.
5. Receive your guaranteed tax receipt of $500+
After the sale, we mail you a tax receipt. If the car sells for more than $500, your receipt and IRS Form 1098-C reflect the actual sale price. If it sells for less than $500, you’re still entitled to deduct up to $500. Either way, you get clear documentation for your records and the peace of mind that your damaged vehicle made a real difference.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or incorrect title in Colorado
Tip: Body damage is fine, but we usually need a proper Colorado title to complete the donation. If yours is lost, contact your local DMV (for example in Denver, Jefferson, or El Paso County) for a replacement. We can often guide you through what’s required so the pickup and transfer don’t get delayed.
Severely unsafe or blocked-in vehicles
Tip: Cars with caved-in frames, sharp exposed metal, or those blocked by other vehicles may require special towing equipment. Make sure we know about any safety concerns or tight access in advance so we send the right truck and avoid rescheduling your pickup in places like narrow Capitol Hill alleys or mountain driveways.
Personal items left inside a totaled vehicle
Tip: It’s easy to forget belongings when a car has been sitting after an accident or hailstorm. Before towing, thoroughly check under seats, trunk, glove box, and storage bins. Once the vehicle is removed and sent to auction or a buyer, getting personal items back can be difficult or impossible.
Loan or lien still on the damaged car
Tip: If a lender is still listed on your Colorado title, we typically need proof the lien is satisfied before accepting the donation. Contact your bank or finance company to obtain a lien release. Clearing this step early helps prevent delays at pickup, especially for late-model vehicles with accident damage.
